Northwestern to play in 2016 Outback Bowl

Following its first 10-win regular season in 20 years, Northwestern will play in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Fla. on Jan. 1.

The Wildcats finished at No. 13 in the final College Football Playoff Rankings and will take on the No. 23 Tennessee Volunteers when the teams meet at Raymond James Stadium. Pat Fitzgerald’s squad just missed out on a New Year’s Six bowl, but will still play at a prestigious bowl on New Year’s Day.

Northwestern last played in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1, 2010, losing to Auburn 38-35 in overtime. This is the Wildcats’ first bowl appearance since the 2013 Gator Bowl, when Northwestern beat Mississippi State 34-20 for the program’s first postseason victory since 1949. A bowl victory this year would give Northwestern a program-record 11 wins.
