The Wildcats came into their weekend series against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights with a 10-11 record in Big Ten play, and were in full control of their own destiny with regards to a spot in the Big Ten Tournament. They came through with an emphatic sweep, outscoring the Scarlet Knights 23-4 in the series.
Cooper Wetherbee was excellent on Thursday, going seven shutout innings, and the offense provided more than enough support. The ‘Cats plated 14 runs in the drubbing, with 6 RBIs coming from senior Matt Hopfner.
In game 2 of the series, Hank Christie was sharp for the ‘Cats, going seven shutout innings to earn his 5th win of the season. Hopfner and fellow senior Joe Hoscheit combined to go 4-7 with 2 RBIs in the 4-0 win.
Finally, the ‘Cats won a tight won on Sunday 5-4. Senior Josh Davis went a career-high seven innings, allowing just one run, and senior Pete Hofman closed it out with an emphatic strikeout.
Now, they will face the Michigan Wolverines, the no. 2 seed in the Big Ten, on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m CT in the Big Ten Tournament.
