Women’s Basketball:

12/28: LOSS vs. Rutgers

12/31: WIN vs. Illinois

Up until their Friday matchup at the Rutgers Athletic Center, the Northwestern Wildcats boasted a strong 6-2 record against unranked opponents. Unfortunately for the ‘Cats, their third quarter run wasn’t enough to fend off the Scarlet Knights, a team currently sitting in first place in the Big Ten.

Rutgers controlled the game confidently through the majority of the contest up until the third quarter. At one point, the Scarlett Knights found themselves leading 34-18, but the Wildcats quickly responded by going on a 15-0 run to start the fourth quarter. The rest of the contest was fought tooth and nail, with Northwestern even claiming a 41-40 lead late in the fourth on a Jordan Hamilton layup. Unfortunately, the momentum wasn’t able to carry over as Rutgers ended the game on a 5-0 run to secure a much-needed home victory.

The return to Welsh-Ryan proved to do wonders for Northwestern, as they seemingly found their offense again after the rough game on the road at Rutgers. The story of the game was sophomore Abi Scheid posting a double-double, with a season-high in both points (25) and rebounds (10). The game was never in question as Northwestern won confidently, 68-45, including a lead of 27 halfway through the third quarter.
