Women’s Basketball:

1/3: WIN vs. No. 15 Michigan State, 70-62

1/8: LOSS vs. Michigan, 79-78

NU Women’s Basketball started off the new year the right way with an upset over a ranked Big Ten opponent in No. 15 Michigan State. Lindsey Pulliam led the team with 18 points, but it was Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah’s last minute three-point play that put the game out of reach. While Michigan State guard Shay Colley had 28 points in the game, it was not enough for the Spartans to continue their eight-game win streak. Their offense stalled in the fourth quarter, as they shot just 3-of-16 from the field. The win for the Northwestern marks their first victory over a ranked opponent in the conference since beating Rutgers in 2015.

The Wildcats faced another talented Big Ten opponent on Tuesday, but they did not fare as well. In an overtime loss on the road against Michigan, Lindsey Pulliam led the team in scoring with 22 points. Going into the fourth quarter, Northwestern led 56-50, but after losing Abi Scheid to an injury Pallas Kunaiyi to fouls, they could not hold on to the lead. Overtime started with the teams tied up at 72, but the Wolverines were able to pull ahead and ultimately protect their undefeated record at home. The back-and-forth game, which had 11 lead changes and 54 free throw attempts, ended 79-78, as Northwestern’s final shot of the game rolled off the rim.

Coming off this strong week, the Wildcats take on Purdue at home in their next matchup. Tune in to WNUR Sports Sunday at 4 p.m. for the call.
