Women’s Basketball:

1/31: LOSS to Minnesota at home, 61-54

2/3: WIN to Ohio State at home, 76-59

After four consecutive wins, Wednesday’s polar vortex hit Chicago brought the Wildcats’ hot streak to an end the next day, as Northwestern suffered a loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Thursday. The Gophers attacked with a three-quarter court press that effectively dismantled the Wildcats on offense. Northwestern turned the ball over 18 times, with nine coming in the first quarter alone.

The ‘Cats bounced back against Ohio State on Sunday to earn their fifth win in six games. Wearing pink for the annual “#Play4Kay” game, Northwestern dominated defensively by converting 20 Buckeye turnovers – 14 of which were steals – into 25 points. Lindsey Pulliam led all players in scoring with 23 points, while Pallas-Kunaiyi Akpanah recorded yet another double-double, marking her sixth in a row and 14th overall this season.

The Wildcats are now 14-8 overall and 7-4 in conference play. They will go on the road to face No. 11 Maryland this Thursday evening before a rematch with Minnesota this Sunday afternoon. Tune in to WNUR sports for the coverage.

BONUS CONTENT: SUPER BOWL LIII

Speaking of dominant defensive performances, the lowest-scoring game in Super Bowl history happened this Sunday. The New England Patriots won the Lombardi Trophy yet again by defeating the Rams, 13-3. Los Angeles quarterback Jared Goff struggled in his first Super Bowl appearance, going only 19 of 38 for 229 yards and one interception, which came in the final minutes of the game and ultimately sealed the Patriots’ win. Defensively, the Rams gave Tom Brady a difficult time, forcing an interception on his first pass of the game and holding him to just 262 yards. However, he was still able to find Julian Edelman for 10 catches and 141 yards, a performance that earned the wide receiver Super Bowl MVP honors. A Sony Michel rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter and a second field goal from Stephen Gostkowski put the game out of reach for the Rams, despite their tremendous defensive efforts through the first three quarters.

Among some of the records broken Sunday night were Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick being the oldest to ever win, the longest punt in a Super Bowl (65 yards) by Rams’ punter Johnny Hekker and Tom Brady winning the most Super Bowls of any player in NFL history.
