Baseball

3/12: vs. MacMurray W 9-0

3/15: at Kent State L 11-5, L 12-1

3/16: at Kent State Cancelled

The Highlanders of MacMurray came to Evanston on Tuesday to take on Northwestern at Rocky and Bernice Miller Park. The ‘Cats pitching staff was elite, as they combined for a one-hit shutout. Parker Hanks made his first career start, throwing five-scoreless innings with one hit and four Ks. Tommy D’Alise finished the game off, entering in the the sixth inning and retiring every batter he faced. On the offensive side, Willie Bourbon led the way, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Charlie Maxwell added two RBIs on two extra-base hits, leading the ‘Cats to a 9-0 victory. On Friday, Northwestern had a double-header against Kent State and dropped both games. In game one, Jack Dunn drove in three of the Wildcats’ five runs, going 1-for-4 with his fourth double of the year. Ryan Bader finished the game off pitching for the Wildcats, throwing 2.2-scoreless innings and allowing just one hit in an 11-5 loss. In the second game of the double-header, Ben Dickey knocked in the only run for the ‘Cats in a 12-1 loss. The third game was cancelled due to weather concerns.

Lacrosse

3/14: at Rutgers W 23-13

Selena Lasota had a career-high nine goals and Izzy Scane a career-high six in this offensive clinic by Northwestern. The Wildcats began the game with three straight goals and never looked back in this Big Ten opener. Brennan Dwyer was dominant on the draw, scooping up 14 of the 24 Northwestern draws and out-drawing Rutgers’ entire team. Lauren Gilbert and Lindsey McKone extended their scoring streaks to seven games, as Gilbert tallied two and McKone added one in the victory over the Scarlet Knights.

Softball

3/16: vs. Toledo W 11-2

316: at No. 19 Indiana W 5-0

On Saturday, the softball team had a doubleheader in Bloomington against Toledo and Indiana. Against Toledo, Kaley Winegarner threw five innings, striking out a career-high eight, and only allowed two runs on three hits. Morgan Nelson finished with a season-high four RBIs on a double, triple and two walks. Nikki Cuchran added three RBIs of her own, while Morgan Newport brought her season-average to a solid .347 after a 2-for-3 outing. The Wildcats ended up winning 11-2, improving their record to 18-6. Later on against Indiana, Northwestern tallied their first ranked win of the season, shutting out the Hoosiers 5-0. Danielle Williams was an ace on the mound, notching her fifth shutout of the year while striking out 10 and allowing just two hits to improve to 13-3 on the year. Rachel Lewis began the scoring with a home run in the first at-bat of the game, while Morgan Nelson, Maeve Nelson, and Morgan Newport also had home runs on the day.
