Baseball is back!
There may be snow on the ground in Evanston, but Northwestern baseball gets its season started today in sunny Glendale, AZ with a three game series against Omaha. The season begins with a 4pm central first pitch Friday, followed by games at 1pm on Saturday and Sunday. Ben Moskow has the call all weekend on WNUR Sports.
FRIDAY: RHP Joey Machado vs RHP Mike Doherty
SATURDAY: LHP Spencer Koelewyn vs LHP Quinn Lavelle
SUNDAY: RHP Richie Holetz vs RHP Tyler Uberstine
Three Things to Know:
This weekend will see the Northwestern debut of highly-touted RHP Tyler Uberstine, a transfer from USC. Uberstine is expected to slot into the rotation in the Sunday slot behind returners Mike Doherty and Quinn Lavelle. The Manhattan Beach, CA native should provide a significant lift to the Wildcat pitching staff after never appearing in a game with the Trojans.
Goose Is Loose:
Sophomore infielder Shawn Goosenberg projects to carry the Northwestern lineup in the 2020 season after a strong freshman campaign in Evanston. Goosenberg was a steady presence near the top of the Northwestern lineup in 2019, hitting .288 with 17 extra-base hits in his first season. His presence will be especially important with the departures of Jack Dunn and Alex Erro to the pro ranks from last season.
Scouting The Mavericks:
Omaha is certainly no slouch, coming off a season in which they won 31 games, went 20-10 in conference play, and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The Mavs return two of three weekend starters and four all-conference performers from a season ago.
