Who Are We?
WNUR is a non-commercial, listener-supported radio station broadcasting at a frequency
of 89.3 MHz FM at a power of 7200 watts. The WNUR studios are located on the
campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, IL and the station produces a signal,
which can be heard by nearly 3 million potential listeners throughout Chicagoland.

Underwriting on WNUR:
• Underwriting is a very common and popular practice in non-commercial radio,
and is a staple of NPR’s (National Public Radio) programming.
• Underwriting involves on air announcements recognizing a donor’s sponsorship,
which helps to support a non-commercial radio station’s broadcast operations.
• In addition, underwriting announcements may describe other aspects of a
business, including a slogan, telephone number, address, and much more.
Underwriting Regulations and Details
The Federal Communications Commission created specific guidelines to differentiate
commercials from underwriting announcements. Under these guidelines, the FCC
implements the idea that underwriting announcements must be for the purpose of
identification rather than promotion.
